Chapter 31

“We have at least eight,” the M.E. said, gesturing toward the tarps spread out in front of the two containers they had searched. She didn’t say they were expecting to find more once the other containers were opened and their contents searched through, but John could tell she was. Anyone in her position would have thought the same thing.

“How do you know they belong to different people?” Sara asked. John wasn’t sure if his partner was asking the question because she doubted the M.E.’s assessment, or if she was genuinely curious as to how the M.E. was able to distinguish all the pieces from one another. He was hoping it was the latter. Dr. Donner wasn’t the sort of person who liked to be questioned.

Instead of getting angry with the young investigator, the doctor invited Sara to come over to one of the tarps and take a look for herself. Then she began to explain how she had come to her conclusion. Most of it was based on the parts found.

“Take this one for example,” the M.E. said, pointing to what John thought might be a piece of a jaw bone. “We found four of these.” She picked up the piece and had Sara note the density. “This belonged to a younger woman. Probably in her mid to late twenties.”

John turned to Gary. The agent had just gotten off the phone with his Supervisory Special Agent. Given the new discoveries, the FBI was going to have to shut down a good section of the dock. “Is he sending more help?” John only wanted to know, because at this point, he and Sara were nothing more than dead weight. And they still had their own investigation to run.

“Yeah,” Gary replied. He was clearly overwhelmed by the whole thing. “They’re basically sending everyone they can.”

Though it was good news, John couldn’t help but feel sorry for the man. At some point, his SSA was going to put someone else in charge of the investigation. Not because Gary lacked the skills, but because he was still an outlier as far as the bureau was concerned. They would want someone with a clean record to be the face of their investigation.

“Is there anything you need from us?” John asked.

Gary started to shake his head, then seemed to change his mind. “I’m going to need everything you guys have on the guy who runs the recycling center.”

“You got it,” John replied. He saw no point in holding anything back. “Anything else?”

“How sure are you that Carmen isn’t involved in this?”

John closed his eyes and counted to ten. Why was the FBI always wanting to blame everything on the mob? “I thought we agreed on this?” he asked. In his mind, there was no doubt as to who was to blame for these murders. The cartel had done everything but left their business cards with the bodies.

“We did,” Gary explained.

“But?” John knew there was one coming. There always was with the feds. It was like they had to disagree with everyone on general principle.
